Most website blockers are all or nothing: block YouTube, and the tutorial you need is gone too. Fovely, a focus extension for Chrome and Firefox made by independent developer Muhammed Akcan in Mainz, Germany, works the other way round. You start a focus session with a goal, such as "Learn React hooks", and Fovely checks each video and page title against it. What fits stays; what doesn't is blurred or paused behind a calm overlay, with one click to allow it anyway. Shorts disappear while you focus. A weekly leaderboard lets friends compare focus time, and share cards turn a good week into a post. Fovely only looks at titles, only during a session, and doesn't keep them; if a check fails, the content is shown. It's free on YouTube; Pro, at $4 a month or $36 a year, adds every website, strict mode, schedules and progress tracking.

Under the hood

How it works

When a focus session starts, the extension sends each visible video or page title, with the channel name or site and a short description, to Fovely's server in batches. The server asks Jev, a small classification model by TypeSafe AI running on Cloudflare Workers AI, whether it fits the user's goal, and returns fits, unsure or off. "Off" videos are blurred and "off" pages paused; "unsure" ones are only dimmed, and a work tool like email or a document is never paused.

Verdicts are cached in the browser for the session, so the same video is checked once. If the server is slow or down, everything is shown: Fovely fails open. Titles and goals aren't stored, and the server's logs hold counts and timings only.

Accounts use Google sign-in; payments go through Paddle as merchant of record. The leaderboard is opt-in with a nickname, which is checked for appropriateness before it's shown, and it includes a few clearly labelled pacers, targets generated by Fovely.
